Electrical Panel Upgrade in Los Angeles: When You Need It and What It Costs

An undersized or outdated electrical panel limits what you can do with your home. Here's when to upgrade in LA, what it costs, and what to expect from the process.

The electrical panel is the heart of a home's electrical system — it distributes power from the utility to every circuit in the house. In older Valley homes, original panels are frequently inadequate for modern electrical loads, especially as EV charging, heat pump HVAC, and induction cooking become common.

When You Need a Panel Upgrade

Older panel types: Several panel types common in mid-20th-century construction are known to be problematic and should be replaced regardless of condition:

  • Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) "Stab-Lok" panels: These panels have a documented safety problem — breakers fail to trip under overload, creating fire risk. They're common in Valley homes from the 1950s–1980s and should be replaced.

  • Zinsco (Magnetrip) panels: Similar documented issues with breaker failure. Replace these.

  • Fuse boxes: Original fuse boxes are far too limited in capacity for modern homes (typically 60 amps or less) and lack the protection that modern circuit breakers provide.

100-amp service: Many Valley homes built before 1980 have 100-amp main service. This was adequate for the loads of that era; it's inadequate for homes with modern HVAC, EV charging, and large appliance loads. Upgrading to 200-amp service is recommended.

Renovation-triggered need: Kitchen remodels with high-BTU ranges, induction cooktops, and large appliance packages; HVAC equipment upgrades; EV charging installation; and whole-home renovations all frequently exceed the capacity of original panels.

EV charging: A Level 2 EV charger (40-amp, 240V dedicated circuit) adds significant load. Many older panels cannot add this circuit without upgrading.

What a Panel Upgrade Involves

  1. A licensed electrician (C-10 license) evaluates existing service and determines upgrade requirements
  2. A permit is pulled through LADBS or the applicable city
  3. The utility (LADWP for most Valley properties) is contacted for any service upgrade from the utility side
  4. The old panel is replaced; new circuits are added as needed
  5. Inspection by the city and LADWP coordination for final connection

LADWP service upgrade timeline: If the upgrade requires LADWP to upgrade the service from the street, this can add 2–6 weeks for LADWP scheduling. Plan accordingly if a panel upgrade is on your critical path.
