Frame Materials for LA Climates
Thermally broken aluminum: The most common frame material in LA for sliding glass door systems. Modern aluminum with thermal breaks performs well, looks clean and contemporary, and handles California's UV exposure without the paint adhesion issues that affect aluminum in wetter climates.
Fiberglass: Premium performance for residential applications. The thermal performance of fiberglass exceeds aluminum significantly. More expensive but appropriate for higher-end LA homes.
Vinyl: Used in standard residential applications. Good thermal performance, no maintenance painting. Quality varies — look for multi-chamber profiles.
Wood-clad: Interior wood face for warmth in traditional interiors, aluminum or fiberglass exterior for durability. Premium option.
Glass Considerations
Low-E glass: Required by California Title 24 for new and replacement sliding glass doors. Low-E coatings reduce solar heat gain (SHGC) while maintaining visible light transmission — essential for LA's solar load.
Tempered safety glass: Required by code for all sliding glass doors. Breaks into small rounded fragments rather than sharp shards.
Double vs. triple pane: Most LA installations use double-pane. For homes near freeways or airports where noise is significant, triple-pane is worth the premium.
