What Drives Labor Costs Higher
Substrate preparation. If existing flooring needs to be removed, the substrate leveled or patched, or a self-leveling compound applied, these costs are in addition to installation. Budget $1–$4/sq ft for substrate work on older LA homes.
Large-format tile. Tile larger than 18" requires that the substrate be flatter (within 1/8" over 10 feet per TCNA standards). Getting there in older homes requires more labor — sometimes significant concrete grinding or patching.
Complex patterns. Herringbone, chevron, diagonal, or custom mosaic patterns all add installation time and material waste. Budget $3–$6/sq ft premium for pattern installation.
Stairs. Stair installation for hardwood or LVP involves nosing pieces, risers, and precise cuts — more labor-intensive per unit area. Budget $80–$180 per stair tread and riser.
