Fire considerations: In VHFHSZ areas, some composite decking products meet WUI (wildland-urban interface) code requirements for fire-resistant decking material. Verify that the product you specify is compliant if your property is in a fire hazard zone.

Pressure-Treated Wood
The least expensive new deck material. Pressure-treated pine (with preservative treatment) resists rot and insects. Requires annual sealing to maintain appearance and prevent checking and splintering.
In a high-UV environment like the Valley, untreated pressure-treated wood can check and crack more aggressively than in wetter climates. Quality matters — treat annually or expect a deteriorating appearance within 3–5 years.

Redwood and Cedar
Premium natural wood choices for Southern California decks. Both are naturally rot-resistant. Redwood in particular has a beautiful warm tone that ages gracefully in the California climate.
Clear (knot-free) all-heart redwood is expensive but produces a premium deck that many LA homeowners prefer for its natural, authentic character.
Cost: $30–$55 per square foot installed for redwood; $25–$45 for cedar
Ipe and Tropical Hardwoods
Extremely hard, dense tropical hardwoods — ipe (Brazilian walnut) and similar species — are extremely durable (100-year lifespan in deck applications) and produce a dark, rich deck surface. More expensive and require proper sealing annually, but the longevity and appearance justify the premium in high-end applications.

Permits for Decks in Los Angeles
